Belly Dancing and your Chakras
I remember when I started belly dancing. My son was a baby and I remember feeling that my whole lower body was locked up. It’s hard to describe, but I had lower back pain and since I was still nursing my son there was no menstrual action going on. Locked up, no movement and I wanted to jump into the womanly art of bellydance.
I was aware of my chakras and the 2nd one (sacral) was so low it’s flame was almost out. The second chakra is one of the main chakras when it comes to birthing something into creation. It could be an actual baby, but also it refers to the carrying and pushing creative ideas out into the world.
I had felt blocked and couldn’t even imagine moving my hips that way, circles and undulations. I wanted to. Not for performance but for my own growth.
I gathered a good friend who was willing to go with me and we jumped into a local classes.
Belly dance and body confidence
Belly dance reveres all bodies. All shapes and sizes and encourages that womanly beauty to come out and play. We bared our bellies as we learned how to isolate the different areas of our bodies. Hips moves while chest stayed still. Our chests popped up and down as our pelvis was still and waiting for its chance to move.
How will belly dance make me feel?
I’ve never felt more beautiful, even with my belly bared. There was no judgment.
More importantly I loosened up my whole root and hip area, the still parts. My creativity soared and I felt more balanced. The depression I struggled with abated and I experienced fun and joy.
How does belly dance affect the chakras?
Root chakra is red. It is about security and grounding. If it’s lacking energy you’ll feel a lack of security and may even feel floaty, not knowing what you stand for or what you’re even doing. Money problems can play into things. This all improved for me.
Sacral chakra is orange. It is about relationships and creativity. My friends and I began to laugh more, it was fun!!. My relationship became more secure (rooted) and fun… I even started my period the week after I began classes even though I was still nursing my son exclusively. The movements woke up that area of myself… This meant that once again I was fertile… So perfect.
If you feel the itch to start belly dancing I highly encourage you to join a class. It doesn’t matter your body size or degree of fitness. It’s a judgment-free zone and you may be surprised at how you feel.
